BAS1S Architecture's Estes project celebrates

A culmination of many years of planning, BAS1S Architecture celebrated the opening of The Harmony Foundation, Inc.'s $5 million detoxification center in Estes Park.   “We began this process over 7 years ago with a Master Plan vision” states Principal Architect, Steve Lane.

“It’s very powerful to see the plans come to fruition. In a detox facility we wanted to ensure we were providing the healthiest building possible.” Lane added. “We also wanted to create a very intuitive and peaceful space for people’s first interaction with Harmony’s treatment program.”

The 10,500 square foot detoxification building includes 20 beds, intake center, staff offices and nursing rooms to allow for the initial 24-hour medical supervision. Also included in the project, The Harmony Foundation has a new 8,000 square-foot dining hall and multipurpose pavilion to serve their entire campus - also designed by BAS1S.

In 1971 President Nixon signed into law Clown Week, a week to recognize clowns and the work they do for our communities around the nation. National Clown Week takes place every year from August 1st through the 7th.

As a Planetree Designated Hospital, one of Longmont United Hospital’s patient-centered initiatives is arts and entertainment which includes therapeutic clowning as an inspirational and powerful tool to promote the healing process. LUH’s Caring Clown program was created in 2000 after world renowned physician, comedian and clown Patch Adams visited the City of Longmont and assisted with the dedication of LUH’s new hospital tower. LUH’s Caring Clowns are volunteers dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of hospitalized patients, their families, friends and caregivers. Our clowns complete a comprehensive clown training course on the art of gentle humor.

In celebration of National Clown Week 2015, all nine of the LUH Caring Clowns will be at the hospital on Wednesday, August 5, starting at 11:00 am to visit with as many patients and visitors as possible. On Friday, August 7th the clowns will head up to the Carousel of Happiness, located at 20 Lakeview Drive in Nederland, CO for an hour of good times, 9:30 – 10:30 am. The Carousel is a magical menagerie featuring 56 whimsical, hand-carved animals on a restored 1910 Looff carousel, turning to the music of a 1913 Wurlitzer band organ. The Colorado Clowns will be joining in the festivities. The Carousel opens to the public at 10:00 am and the clowns invite as many people as possible to come and ride the carousel with them.

Crayons to Calculators encourages community members to pack backpacks for St. Vrain Valley Students

There are over 9,000 children in the St. Vrain Valley School District on the federal lunch assistance program, a common indicator of family poverty.  Many of these children routinely start school without basic school supplies for learning.
Last year, through the Crayons to Calculators program, the Education Foundation for the St. Vrain Valley provided approximately 5,000 backpacks filled with grade appropriate school supplies to ensure that an increasing number of our students have the supplies they need to succeed.  This year’s goal is to surpass that by the start of school in August.
Crayons to Calculators invites businesses, organizations, and community members to volunteer throughout the month of July organizing school supplies and packing backpacks for elementary, middle, and high school students in the St. Vrain Valley school district.  Volunteers can sign up alone or with a group of up to 20 people. Sign up is done through VolunteerSpot at http://vols.pt/Uyt54e or by going to the Crayons to Calculators page on our website, www.efsvv.org .  We encourage volunteers to sign up as early as possible.  Any inquiries or questions should go to our 2015 Summer Intern, Alexis Nehls.  She can be reached by email at alexis.efsvv@gmail.com or by phone at 720-652-8208.

Longmont Startup Week June 1-5th

The inaugural Longmont Startup Week is scheduled to take place June 1st - June 5th.  The theme of the week,  “LSW15: The Heart of Startup”.
Event Director Jennifer Ferguson explained, "LSW15: The Heart of Startup is a way of expressing that innovation is central to Longmont's future, in the same way that our town is central to Colorado's success. It also reflects a slightly different take on the Startup theme - we are not a cold, technical environment: the community in Longmont is incredibly supportive, and we are extremely welcoming to new business. We really do have a lot of heart." Startup Longmont is expected to attract some of the country's top speaker talent to share their knowledge and experiences.
The event is organized by Startup Longmont, a volunteer group comprising almost 300 members and founded by TinkerMill (www.tinkermill.org), Colorado's largest makerspace.  TinkerMill founder Scott Converse said, "It's a true community effort that is already pulling together entrepreneurs, businesses, non-profits, government and residents of the city."
Marketing Director Jon Rice added, "It is simply a group of like-minded people who believe that Longmont has the right location, the right spirit, and the right entrepreneurial blend: high quality-of-life and low cost of doing business."
